Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 Vs MediaTek Helio P70 (The Winner is?)

The comparison between Snapdragon 712 vs P70 is going to be very interesting because both these chipset are possibly the best mid-range chipset from their respective companies namely Qualcomm and MediaTek. The Snapdragon 712 is relatively new processor as compared to P70. The company has announced 712 on 6th of Feb, 2019 as the successor to Snapdragon 710.

On the other hand, Helio P70 was launched in September, 2018 and was the successor of Helio P60 which was a budget range chipset.  Both these chipset tries fills the gap between the flagship chipset and mid-range processors. Last year, Realme U1 was launched using P70. This year, Oppo has confirmed that they will be launching their much awaited Oppo F11 Pro with MediaTek Helio P70 chipset. On the other hand, Mi 9 SE will be the first smartphone to be launched with Snapdragon 712.

The snapdragon 712 is a small upgrade from 710. It is fragmented in 10 nm with 64-bit architecture. This octa-core chipset contains 8X kyro 306 CPU cores. It has Adreno 616 GPU and Snapdragon X15 modem. The cores are clocked at maximum of 2.3 Ghz. The cores of 712 are distributed as 2 Gold Cortex A-75 cores and 6 Silver cortex A-55 cores.

The Helio P70 is also a quad core processor but it is an ARM based chipset. Its cores are distributed as 4x Coretex A53 cores and 4x Cortex A73 cores. The cores are clocked to the maximum speed of 2.1 Ghz. It is fabricated at 12 nm hence the performance will be a bit slow as compared to snapdragon 712. There are similarly like both use 64 bit architectures and have octa-cores. But the major difference lies in the clock speed and fabrication process which is much better in 712. So performance wise, Snapdragon 712 is a clear winner.

Helio P70 VS Snapdragon 712 (GPU Performance)

The GPU plays an important role in the overall performance of a chipset. With Snapdragon 712, you get Adreno GPU which is probably the best in any mid-range processor. This supports artificial intelligence engine. On the other hand, Mediatek P70 has ARM Mali-G72 MP3 GPU which is same as we have seen in Helio P60. However, in P70, the GPU is maximum frequency of 900 MHz as compared to 800 MHz in P60.

In order to handle the Artificial Intelligence, the Snapdragon 712 has Hexagon 685 DSP vertor processor. The combination of Qualcomm® Kryo™ 360 CPU, GPU: Qualcomm® Adreno™ 616 GPU, Qualcomm® Hexagon™ 685 Vector Processor provides a very advanced on-device AI.

In Mediatek Helio P70, there is a dedicated AI unit. Its AI accelerator can reach up the speed of 280 GMAC/s.

In Snapdragon 712, you get Qualcomm Spectra 250 image signal processor and 2X (ISP). It supports features like dual 16 MP camera with MFNR, ZSL and 30fps shooting. In case of single camera, it supports up to 32 MP with MFNR and ZSL and 30fps shooting or a single camera up to 48 MP with MFNR. It also supports a third-camera set-up of a single camera up to 192 MP. In video recording department, it can support ultra HD video recording. 10-bit color depth, and 2020 color gamut video recording is also supported.

On the other hand, Helio P70 supports up to 32 MP single camera at 30 fps. In dual camera setup, it supports 20MP + 16MP at 90 fps. It can record video in 4K at 30 fps. It supports most of the camera settings such as AI, face-detection, multi-frame noise cancellation, EIS, anti-blooming engine, HDR video recording and PDAF.

Helio P70 Vs Snapdragon 712 (Display Support)

Snapdragon 712 can support maximum on-device display of Quad HD+ and HDR10. The resolution can go up to 3360×1440 which is very bright and gives a high PPI. The maximum external display support can go up to 4K. For HDR support, it has 10-bit color depth and Rec 2020 color gamut. Since no smartphone has been launched with Snapdragon 712 till now, it will be very interesting to see the display details including aspect ratio. The teaser of Xiaomi Mi 9 SE containing Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 suggests that it has 21:9 aspect ratio.

As compared to 712, Helio P70 only has full HD screen support at 2160×1080 pixels. We have seen some smartphones based on P70 including Readme U1 which has vibrant display. It supports maximum aspect ratio up to 20:9.

Snapdragon 712 vs Helio P70 (RAM, Storage and Connectivity)

712 come with LPDDR4X RAM support up to 8 GB. For storage, it supports EMMC5.1 as well as UFS2.1. On the other hand, P70 supports LPDDR3 up to 4GB as well as LPDDR4X up to 8GB. For storage it supports UFS2.1 and EMMC5.

For connectivity, Snapdragon 712 has X15 LTE modem that support peak download of 800 Mbps. It has Cat 13 technology that can achieve the uploading speed up to 150 Mbps. The other connectivity features includes dual LTE, USB 3.1, BlueTooth 5.0, Type-C and dual band Wifi.

In Helio P70, you have limited connectivity features. It has Cat-7 DL/Cat UL dual 4G LTE. It supports FDD/TDD LTE, HSPA + cellular technology. The other connectivity options are Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-fi and GPS.

As far as specifications are concerned, Snapdragon 712 has an edge over Helio P70. We didn’t have any smartphone running on 712 processor right now. Xiaomi has announced that they will be launching their Mi 9 SE with this processor. On the other hand, we have seem so many smartphones based on Helio P70 including Realme U1. The upcoming phones coming with this processor will be Oppo F11 Pro and Vivo V15.

The performance of any smartphone directly depends on its processor. On paper, it is very clear that Mi 9 SE will be a better device than Oppo F11 Pro as well as Vivo V15. We don’t know the prices of these smartphones hence its price-point will also be a deciding factor.
